European Immunization Agenda 2030: introduction to a new strategy for joint action

Share

Adopted by the 71st session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe

The European Immunization Agenda 2030 (EIA2030) is a vision and strategy, crafted by Member States, for achieving the full benefits of immunization in the WHO European Region. It aims to create stronger and more resilient immunization systems and structures, based on the key pillars of immunization equity, life-course immunization and tailored local solutions.

A bottom-up approach to build back better

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on health systems, including in the area of routine vaccinations. EIA2030 was formulated through a consultative process involving Member States and partners to build forward stronger, by creating more resilient immunization systems and structures. It is based on lessons learned and the key pillars of immunization equity, life-course immunization and tailored local solutions that address vaccination demand and acceptance in the population. EIA2030 is one of the flagship initiatives of the European Programme of Work, 2020–2025 – “United Action for Better Health in Europe”.

“This pandemic has reminded everyone of the role immunization plays in protecting individuals and health systems from infectious diseases,” said Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, Regional Director of WHO/Europe in his remarks to the Committee. “Leaving no one behind as an overarching principle of the European Programme of Work and the European Immunization Agenda 2030 is both an aim and means of strengthening immunization programmes.”

By strengthening immunization systems in the Region, EIA2030 implementation will help to:

  • reduce mortality and morbidity caused by diseases preventable through vaccination;
  • increase equitable access to new and existing vaccines for everyone regardless of age, identity and geographic location; and
  • strengthen primary health care and thereby contribute to achieving universal health coverage and sustainable development.

Local action towards a global vision

Aligned with the global Immunization Agenda 2030, EIA2030 addresses the specific needs and challenges related to immunization in the WHO European Region. Through implementation of this strategy, the Member States of the Region aim to contribute to a world in which everyone, everywhere, at every age, fully benefits from vaccines.
