Danish right-wing politician Morten Messerschmitt, one of the leaders of the Danish People’s Party, received a suspended sentence yesterday for misusing European funds, DPA reported.

Messerschmitt, who is vice-president of the Danish People’s Party, denies the charges against him. His lawyer announced that he would appeal the sentence.

The trial against Messerschmitt, a former MEP, dragged on for several years. The indictment alleges that the politician provided false information about a conference held at European level, which was not actually organized. His alleged goal was to raise nearly 100,000 Danish kroner ($ 15,900) from EU funds.

In the last parliamentary elections in 2019, the Danish People’s Party won only 8.7 percent of the vote, after winning 21.1 percent in previous elections.
