Dark web: some 150 people arrested in a global sweep. Europol says that actions were carried out “in Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States”.

According to the European police agency, several million euros in cash and bitcoins as well as drugs and weapons were also seized in the operation called “DarkHunTOR”.

DarkHunTOR “consisted of a series of separate but complementary actions in Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States,” Europol said.

Name of the operation: DarkHunTOR. A vast global crackdown on illegal trade on the dark web has resulted in the arrest of some 150 suspects, Europol announced on Tuesday 26 October. The European police agency said a “series of separate but complementary actions” had been carried out “in Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and the US”.

It seized €26.7 million in cash and electronic currency, 45 firearms and 234 kilos of drugs. Among the drugs confiscated were 150 kilos of amphetamine, 27 kilos of opioids and 25,000 ecstasy tablets, in the operation which follows the dismantling in January of DarkMarket, a major online black market site.

In the US, some 65 people were arrested, 47 arrests were made in Germany, 24 in the UK, 4 in Italy and 4 in the Netherlands. Several of those arrested were “high profile targets” for Europol. In Italy, the police closed down “DeepSea” and “Berlusconi”, which had “more than 100,000 ads for illegal products”, according to Europol.
