Less deployment and more collective defence is NATO’s new vision after the Afghan disaster

NATO’s 30 defence ministers met for two days at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters, the first face-to-face meeting in 18 months.

The alliance’s members agreed on Thursday to withdraw forces to protect themselves from China and Russia, which are seen as threatening powers.

“We will not mirror Russia’s destabilising behaviour and we have no intention of deploying new missiles in Europe. We are therefore implementing a balanced package of political and military measures to address these threats.”

Jens Stoltenberg – UN Secretary General

To prepare its defence the Alliance relies on a billion dollar fund, it is to be used to finance innovation and modernisation of its arsenal.

“We will monitor any attempt by international terrorist groups to regroup in Afghanistan. Allies have the ability to strike from over the horizon against terrorist threats. We will hold the Taliban accountable for meeting their commitments on terrorism, safe passage and human rights.”

Jens Stoltenberg – UN Secretary General

The fate of Afghanistan is a divisive issue in the alliance, and one that should be at the heart of Friday’s face-to-face meeting. The Americans are under fire from European chancelleries, which blame Washington for a hasty and disorderly departure.

NATO and the Europeans are associated with it. Afghanistan is the only external operation they have built with Article 5, i.e. “we have been attacked on our territory, we ask the alliance to come and support us in our fight”. Will the Americans answer this question frankly, being the backers of NATO for 80%, it remains a question mark.
