Turkish hoteliers discussed Russian, Ukrainian and German tourists. The main question is whether Turkey receives a sufficient amount of tourism income from these main tourists or a massive flow of tourists does not always guarantee high profitability, and which of the tourists refuses to spend an extra penny when buying a tour.

Over the past 10 years, the number of holiday-makers from Ukraine has exceeded 1.5 million. A significant leap in the Ukrainian market took place during and after the 2016 crisis.

So, was Turkey able to get sufficient tourist income from the Ukrainian market and how much did a Ukrainian tourist spend on average when buying a ticket to Turkey?

According to research carried out by TurizmDatabank, a high level of sales of package tours has been recorded in Ukraine. Until 2016, the cost of one person for a trip was $ 450. And from 2016 to 2019, they fell to the $ 350-360 range. At the same time, over the same period of time, the number of Ukrainian tourists arriving as part of package tours increased from 550 thousand to 850 thousand.

What happened during the pandemic?

By the end of 2019, the number of Ukrainian tourists reached 850 thousand, and the cost per person increased again to $ 416. In the first 6 months of 2021, the number of tourists from Ukraine exceeded the indicator of 2019 and amounted to 446 thousand tourists. And in the spring of 2021, when Russia stopped air traffic with Turkey, Ukrainians took the first line in the ranking in terms of the number of tourists in Turkey. However, “package” expenses per person for the first half of the year in the 2021 season decreased even more – from $ 373 to $ 329. This means that the Ukrainians, although they traveled in droves to Turkey, chose budget / hot tours.

Russian and German market

The Russians did not go far from the Ukrainians either. The willingness of our compatriots to spend money on quality vacations also did not please Turkish hoteliers – the figures for Russians are much lower than the average for tourists coming to Turkey. German vacationers are who they would like to see in even more numbers in Turkish resorts. Their leisure expenses are well above average.

Let’s compare. During the above period, the expenses of Russian holidaymakers on ready-made tours per person decreased from $ 500 to $ 440, and in 2021 – to $ 380. However, this is $ 51 more than the average Urkaints traveler spends. The expenses of German tourists also decreased, but not so dramatically: the drop occurred from $ 580 to $ 572. However, according to experts, by the end of 2021, the average German bill for the purchase of a package vacation will exceed $ 619. For comparison: in 2019, a tourist from Germany spent an average of $ 491 on a tour. The growth trend is significant. It turns out that the most tight-fisted tourists, according to Turkish extras, are Ukrainians.
