Two climbers were killed and nine others were injured by falling pieces of ice in the Alps in southern Switzerland, Reuters reported on 28 of May 2022.

Police in the canton of Valais received a signal for the accident shortly after 6 o’clock local time. Seven rescue helicopters were sent.

The ice floes fell on a group of 17 climbers at an altitude of 3400 meters. Two of the climbers, a 40-year-old Frenchwoman and a 65-year-old Spaniard, died on the spot.

Police said nine other people had been taken to hospitals and two were seriously injured.

Other climbers were evacuated by helicopter.

The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances of the accident.
