At a ceremony on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, the Royal Academy of Dance’s most prestigious honor

The wife of the British King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla presented ballet master Mikhail Baryshnikov with an award of the Royal Academy of Dance, TASS and “Variety” reported.

At a ceremony on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, the academy’s most prestigious honour. It was founded by the late British monarch in 1953 when she was crowned.

The awards ceremony is Queen Consort Camilla’s first solo official engagement since King Charles III took the British throne. The Queen Consort wore a ballerina brooch on her jacket lapel for the event at the Royal Academy of Dance. “It is a great honor for me to have the opportunity to present you with this award. No one deserves it more than you,” Camila told Baryshnikov. He was awarded the prize for his “enormous contribution to the art of ballet and the world of dance”.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is “one of the most famous ballet dancers in history, who has inspired many young and aspiring performers around the world,” Darcy Bassel, president of the academy, said at the ceremony.

The laureate said he was flattered to be awarded the award. “It is a real honor to be included in the impressive list of laureates. I am proud to have worked with many of them and can call them my friends,” said the 74-year-old choreographer. Rudolph Nureyev, choreographers Carlos Acosta and Matthew Bourne, famous Russian prima ballerina Tamara Karsavina and others have been honored with the prestigious award.

Born in 1948 in Riga, Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of the greatest dancers of our time, writes the website of the Royal Academy of Dance.

Baryshnikov is a Soviet and American ballet dancer and ballet master, Honored Artist of the RSFSR since 1973, TASS recalls. He was a soloist with the Leningrad Opera and Ballet in the period 1967-1974. While on tour in Canada in 1974, he decided not to return to his homeland and accepted an offer to perform at the American Ballet Theater in New York. In 2005, he founded the Baryshnikov Center for the Arts in New York, which he directs to this day. It is filmed in television and cinema.

In an article by the British “Guardian” in March, one of the leading figures of male ballet in the 1970s and 1980s, Mikhail Baryshnikov, born in Soviet Riga and now living in Harlem, Manhattan, New York, admitted that he was opposed to the imposition of severe sanctions on fellow artists or sportsmen: Russian performers and artists, according to him, should not be forced to pay the price for the war in Ukraine.
